SIGNS OF FOUNDATION PROBLEMS
It’s important to regularly inspect your home or building for signs of foundation problems. Here are six early-warning signs to look out for.
CRACKED, CRUMBLING FOUNDATION
As you inspect your property, you’ll want to first check the foundation of your home or building. Do you see any fractures or cracks in your concrete or any crumbling of flaking concrete? These are all signs of foundation problems.
SHIFTING SOIL
Shifting soil is a cause of foundation failure. Heaving from growing tree roots or a dramatic freeze-and-thaw cycle can cause natural movement in the soil. Settling, which can occur from decaying tree roots or collapsing soil, can also cause the ground to shift.
FOUNDATION GAPS
As you inspect your property, keep an eye out for gaps where the walls, floors, or ceiling should meet. These gaps typically appear on the outside of a home or building and can indicate a faulty foundation.
WATER DAMAGE
Water damage can also cause the soil to shift, which, as mentioned, can be a sign of foundation problems. Check your home or building for signs of moisture like damp or wet areas, especially after it rains. Mold and mildew in the corners of windows and walls can also be the result of foundation-related cracks and gaps.
SUNKEN FLOORS
Are your floors made of concrete? Settled, or sunken concrete is a common problem for home and business owners. While some unevenness may not be cause for concern, excessive sinking can be a sign of foundation problems.
ILL-FITTING DOORS OR WINDOWS
Do your doors or windows often get stuck when trying to open them? Or, do they no longer close all the way? Home doors, windows, garage doors, and vents should fit snugly. When they fit too tight or too loose, it may be a sign of foundation issues.
HOW TO FIX FOUNDATION PROBLEMS
When inspecting your home for signs of foundation problems, you may notice a few areas that need to be repaired. Perhaps you have water leaking into your basement? Or a gap between you’re the floor and the wall?
